“Is your inbox too BIG?” – IT Support Episode 39

Hi, I’m Christian from “Northstar IT” and this week I want to talk about your email inbox.

Sometimes in life, big things are best.

Oh do behave, I’m not talking about that.

But when it comes to managing your inbox, big is definitely not best and for those of you who know me you’ll quite often hear me bang on about how you should keep a good folder structure in Outlook. It’ll help you locate emails, even with the search tools they will work better if you haven’t got as many emails stashed in your inbox.

According to a survey I found on the internet around about 20% of email users will have over 21,000 emails in their inbox and in the most extreme cases some will have up to three quarters of a million emails in their inbox.

That’s just absurd!

It does nothing for your productivity or work efficiency. I even found a really interesting article compliments of the Harvard Business School. Keeping your emails organised and your inbox as empty as possible is good for you, your productivity and in my experience good for self-satisfaction at coming to the end of the day.

I always like to finish the day with as much white space at the bottom of my inbox as possible and if you checked my inbox today or at least when I last looked at it, there were 35 emails in there. I treat it like a pending tray if I don’t need to keep it, it gets deleted, if I’m getting spammed, it gets filtered, and if I do need to keep it, it goes in a folder.

That way my inbox is as tidy as possible and you know what they say, a tidy house is a tidy mind. Well it also applies to your inbox.

So keep a greater level of peace of mind and make sure those emails are stashed in folders or deleted.

If you’d like to check out any of my other videos, do a search of “Northstar IT” on Youtube and especially look for episode #35.

It’s got all the outtakes and bloopers for 2020 and the feedback is, yep, you can have a giggle on my account.

So until next time.
