Backups are boring (Part 4) – IT Support Episode 104

Backups can seem dull and unnecessary.  Captain Christian says he has heard every excuse going.  But here’s a thought, assuming you ARE doing them, and of course checking them.  How long do you keep them for? A week, a month, a year?  But what happens when something is important, and it may take a while to notice it isn’t there anymore?

When it comes to cloud backups, you can elect to have a service that suits your needs, but what are they?  How long would it take you to notice that something isn’t there anymore?  No matter what the cause, hardware failure or more commonly human failure. Whatever the need, whether it be your professional regulations OR personal ones.

Inspired by a recent case with a client, Captain Christian made this video to answer some questions, and more importantly to remind you to ask them yourself.

If you have any questions or would like a backup review, just contact us we’ll happily get in touch. (And if you would like to see more of reckless Ken and sensible Barbie then check out vlog episode 45.)

“Backups are boring (Part 4)” – IT Support Episode 104

They’re not boring when you need them.

A client of ours needed to restore some data that had disappeared some time ago. First of all we tested the backup and yes it was working.

However, this data seemed to have disappeared at least a year ago so we had to go digging a little deeper. Thankfully, we had a copy of the old data on site when we’d done the server installation and our wizzy chief engineer had it all documented and proof that we’d moved that data from one to the other.

What I want to focus on is the solution that would have ensured this problem wouldn’t have happened. Although we’ve managed to get back the most important data that the managing director was after, there’s still more data on that system they’d like back given the choice. So we’ve brought back their old storage system to try and do it.

However, there is a solution that could solve this from happening.

It’s called the cloud.

When it comes to a cloud backup solution it would ensure that you don’t have to worry about data disappearing from many moons ago. You can get cloud backup solutions where you can keep that data indefinitely.

Wow!

So in the case of this client, where it turned out the data had disappeared sometime between about one year and a day ago and about four or five years ago. When we installed the system we would have been able to restore it quickly and easily.

So, I’ve got a question for you, do you want to be a reckless Ken with your data or a sensible Barbie?

Use a cloud backup.

Until next time.
